Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Application

4th year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA. Physicians that have completed a residency in Internal Medicine who are board eligible/board certified are eligible to apply for a fellowship position. (*Residents applying to this program must meet Department of Defense (DoD) standards to become and active duty service member of either the US Army or US Air Force. Graduates of this program will incur an active duty service obligation).

Criteria for Selection

Criteria for selection include academic performance in medical school and residency, USMLE/COMLEX scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service showing leadership potential, along with physical, mental and moral fitness.

Research

All fellows are required to participate in either clinical or basic science research. The goal is to publish a manuscript in a peer reviewed journal or to present data at a national meeting by the end of three years. In addition to participation in the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) clinical trials, fellows have the opportunity to get involved with industry-based clinical trials, phase I research, as well as bench research at the Institute of Surgical Research (ISR) or the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA).

Fellowship

Eligibility -- Active duty Medical Corps (MC) officers who are U.S. citizens and a graduate of an accredited U.S. school of medicine. Any MC active duty officer, who is a graduate from a foreign medical school, must possess a standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

NLT 15 September of the year before training begins.
