About Us

Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Service treats patients with a wide variety of diseases of the chest, including open heart, pulmonary, and esophageal surgery. Students will be responsible for evaluating patients preoperatively, assisting as a member of the team in the operating room, and assisting the resident staff in the management of postoperative patients. Uncomplicated therapeutic and diagnostic procedures may be performed by the student under direct supervision. The opportunity to advance in clinical knowledge and skills is exceptional, since the student will be involved in the management of a large and complex service with continuous supervision by senior surgical residents in Cardiothoracic Surgery (generally in their sixth or seventh year of postgraduate training). This is an intense rotation, with approximately eight to ten major operations each week. There are scheduled conferences four days a week, including a full Saturday morning of teaching conferences. At the end of the rotation, the student should have gained considerable knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the chest, and should be well versed in the management of the cardiothoracic subsystem in the Intensive Care Unit.
