General Surgery

General Surgery Service consists of an impatient emergency and elective surgery service, same day surgery, and outpatient services. BAMC General Surgery operates the Army's only Level I trauma team. Patients admitted to the service are those with a wide range of surgical disorders including those in the head and neck and peripheral vascular subspecialties. The service has an active outpatient clinic which sees an average of 1000 patients per month. Approximately 180 major operations are performed by the resident staff per month. Senior medical students are expected to actively participate in all phases of perioperative patient management which includes ward and clinical procedures, operations, and pre-operative assessments. They will take call every third night and become part of the surgical trauma team. Each senior student attends all service conferences and teaching rounds.
