Pediatrics Residency Locations

SAMMC is comprised of six treatment facilities such as San Antonio Military Medical Center, CPT Jennifer M. Moreno Primary Care Clinic, McWethy Troop Medical Clinic, SPC Taylor Burk clinic, Center for the Intrepid, and Schertz Medical Home. It is a state-of-the-art, 425 bed medical center that originally opened in April 1996 and has recently undergone an extensive revision with the addition of the new tower following Base Realingment and Closure (BRAC). Located on historic Ft Sam Houston, the "Home of Army Medicine," the hospital is also home to SAMMC Pedatrics Center (SAMPC) inpatient pediatric services with a 21 bed inpatient service, 6 bed PICU, 7 bed Heme/Onc Service, and a Pediatric Procedural Sedation Unit. In addition, a large number of pediatric subspecialty services are offered and based out of the new tower to include Pediatric Cardiology, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Developmental Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Genetics, Pediatric Infectious Disease, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Pulmonology, and Pediatric Surgery. SAMMC is also the headquarters for both SAUSHEC GME and the Pediatric Residency.

WHASC is located on Lackland Air Force Base, the location of Air Force basic training. Following BRAC, construction has begun to convert the hospital into a state–of-the-art outpatient surgical and primary care clinic. Currently the medical home to over 14,000 pediatric beneficiaries, WHASC offers residents the opportunity to rotate through and participate in a high-volume, high-flow clinic that has set the standard for how a medical home should function within the military training environment.

CRDAMC is the third integrated teaching hospital of the SAUSHEC Pediatric Residency. It is located on Ft Hood, TX, 140 miles north of San Antonio. Ft Hood is the largest Army post in the world. CRDAMC performs more than 1,800 deliveries a year and 150,000 pediatric clinic visits a year with a faculty of 10 Army and 4 to 6 civilian pediatricians. The resident rotations at CRDAMC are designed in part to better prepare our graduates for the environment in which most of them will practice after completion of training.

In addition to the pediatric residency, SAMPC is also the location of both a tri-service adolescent fellowship and neonatology fellowship. In addition, it is the military's only Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Center. Our residents and subspecialists care for local and military children referred from Air Force and Army bases in Louisiana and Oklahoma and serves as the militaries center for worldwide ECMO transports. Patients at military community hospitals are co-managed by their local pediatricians, SAMMC PC faculty, and SAUSHEC residents, providing our residents excellent teaching cases for GME from a broad geographic region. Apart from in house activities, our residents are also exposed to valuable perspectives in caring for children with special disabilities by rotating at a summer camp run by the Children's Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP) and participate in the Military Unique Curriculum (MUC) which focuses on medical management of pediatric patients in austere environments. With a focus on both global and military medical care, it is the goal of the program to provide residents with every opportunity to participate in humanitarian and readiness missions to further develop both their clinical and officership skills throughout the residency.

The combination of Army/Air Force pediatric faculty of the BAMC, WHASC, and CDDAMC ensures that the program has multiple faculty in every pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty. This faculty is dedicated to teaching and this has been routinely rated as the number one strength of our training program by the SAUSHEC Pediatric Residents.

To round out our education the SAUSHEC Pediatric Residency joined collaborated with the University of Texas Health Science Center and the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (CHofSA) to provide additional sites for residency training through rotations in the NICU, PICU, Ward, and multiple community clinics. This partnership has led to a unique experience for our residents as they gain exposure to multiple diverse patient populations both through the military medical centers and the civilian counterparts.

The combination of an outstanding faculty, broad patient populations, state-of-the-art facilities, and close university ties makes the SAUSHEC one of the premier pediatric residencies in the nation. Come visit us and experience all that SAUSHEC has to offer you and your future education.
