Morning Report -- Morning report is case-oriented and conducted at Wilford Hall by the Chief Resident of the Inpatient Service. From Monday through Thursday, it is from 0730-0800, and on Fridays is 0700-0730. Admissions from the previous 24 hours are discussed. Morning report is primarily designed as a teaching conference for residents.

Core Lecture Series Monday through Thursday from 0800-0845 at Wilford Hall.

Lectures by the faculty cover a critical core of pediatric knowledge over a three year residency.

Chief of Resident Rounds Fridays 0730-0930.

The first hour is a review and discussion of the most interesting cases of the past week that were seen as outpatients or admitted. The second hour is dedicated to one of five teaching conferences: Friday Didactics 0700-0930.

Every Friday the SAMPC House staff and Faculty come together for formal didactics and conferences. This is protected time for the residents during which our formal “Grand Rounds”, Journal Clubs, M&M conferences, Quality Improvement and Joint Pediatric/ED conferences occur. While the majority of this time is run by the staff, residents take an active role in presenting cases, journal articles, and quality improvement projects which serve as a spring board for large group discussions and active learning. Residents and staff from WHASC and CRDAMC also participate through video-teleconferencing during these didactics. Following these formal didactics the residents take part in either "Chief Rounds," class mentor meetings, or board review.

Board Review – The SAMPC Pediatric Residency is focused on providing residents with a well rounded, clinically applicable education that will prepare them to excel as military pediatricians. As such we place a great deal of emphasis on board preparation and educational activities as outlined above. To facilitate this we have developed a robust educational plan based upon the AAP core curriculum and utilize the MedStudy board review plan from the first day of orientation. Residents are provided with the MedStudy Core Pediatric series which will be completely covered each year of their residency through a combination of bi-monthly small and large group activities and assigned board review questions given out as monthly quizzes. This all culminates in the final months of the third year when each graduating resident will participate in an “In-House” five day board review course led by the Chief of Residents and Program Director.

Conferences and Local Courses – In addition to the core ACGME Pediatric requirements and program specific conferences, residents are encouraged to participate in both local and national conventions and experiences. Recently residents have presented at a wide variety of national and regional military and civilian conferences on topics ranging from general pediatrics to Allergy and Immunology and Dermatology. In addition, residents are highly encouraged to become active in the health promotion of children around San Antonio by participating in school and community based educational seminars. Finally, in keeping with our mission focus, each resident is afforded the opportunity to participate in the Military Unique Curriculum which focuses on the practice of modern medicine in austere environments culminating in the opportunity to participate in a humanitarian mission or MEDRET (funding and opportunity permitting).
