Psychiatry Residency Didactic Curriculum

A. PGY-1

PGY-1 residents spend the majority of their year rotating on other services. However, residents are required to attend the Tuesday Residents' Noon Conference, Psychiatry Grand Rounds at UTHSCSA, Morning Report when on psychiatry rotations, and Tuesday didactic seminars. The minimum attendance rate for noon conference for PGY-1 is 60%. The minimum attendance rate for UTHSCSA Grand Rounds and Tuesday seminar series for each time slot is 70% (see Professional Guidelines for further details). All PGY 1 residents are required to attend 7:30 Morning Report at UT when they are on inpatient rotations at UH or VAH, and WH Morning Report when they are on inpatient psychiatry rotations at WH. Each seminar and/or rotation may have assigned readings that will be discussed with faculty.

B. PGY-2

All PGY-2 residents are required to attend 7:30 Morning Report at UT when they are rotating at UH or VAH, and WH Morning Report when they are at WH, and are required to attend the Tuesday Residents' Noon Conference, Psychiatry Grand Rounds at UTHSCSA, and Tuesday didactic seminars. Each seminar and/or rotation may have assigned readings that will be discussed with faculty.

C. PGY-3

All PGY-3 residents are required to attend 7:30 Morning Report at UT when they are rotating at UH or VAH, and WH Morning Report when they are at WH , and are required to attend the Tuesday Residents' Noon Conference, Psychiatry Grand Rounds at UTHSCSA, and Tuesday didactic seminars. Each seminar and/or rotation may have assigned readings that will be discussed with faculty.

Provided that funding is maintained, each military resident has the opportunity to attend one Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) during the course of his/her residency (during the PGY 3 year), which provides unique opportunities for networking, presenting posters and papers, and gaining exposure to state-of-the-art practice. It also introduces senior residents to the benefits of maintaining an active presence in the APA to help shape policy and lobbying decisions that could have significant impact on Air Force psychiatry.

D. PGY-4

All PGY-4 residents are required to attend 7:30 Morning Report at UT when they are rotating at UH or VAH, and WH Morning Report when they are at WH , and are required to attend the Tuesday Residents' Noon Conference, Psychiatry Grand Rounds at UTHSCSA, and Tuesday didactic seminars. Each seminar and/or rotation may have assigned readings that will be discussed with faculty.

Providing that funding is maintained, military residents have the opportunity to attend the Harvard Review of Psychiatry, an intensive course (49 hours class time in 6 days), held in Boston, Massachusetts each September. This review course offers the full range of knowledge and practice in psychiatry. Similarly, providing that funding is available, military residents have the opportunity to attend The Kaufman Review of Neurology course. This course serves to review the neurological literature necessary for passing the first part of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Examination.

Civilian PGY-4 residents may use their "professional meeting funds" (see UTHSCSA Civilian Psychiatry Resident Benefits) to attend the Harvard Review of Psychiatry, the Kaufman Review of Neurology, the APA, or any other approved professional meeting.
