About Us

Endocrinology Fellowship Program

This two-year program offers training in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. At the end of the training period, fellows will be board eligible. There are 1-2 fellows in each year group of the fellowship (2-4 total). Five faculty (three Air Force and two Army) participate in the education and training of the fellows. Fellows learn how to perform thyroid ultrasound and thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA), interpret bone mineral density testing (DXA), and interpret specialized endocrine metabolic testing. The majority of the education is outpatient, but fellows cover in-patient consults at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Fellows also gain experience with a wide range of diabetes care issues at the Diabetes Center of Excellence at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC). As a tertiary care referral service, this program offers a broad endocrinology experience. Fellows attend lectures at SAMMC and educational programs at the University Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio (UTHSCSA).

Education

The didactic education consists of formal lectures given by the faculty, invited guest lecturers, and other fellows. Conferences are held weekly at SAMMC on Fridays and at UTHSCSA on Mondays (Endocrinology Grand Rounds). There are monthly nuclear medicine conferences, monthly pathology conferences, monthly research conferences, and quarterly pituitary conferences. Fellows have the opportunity to attend national specialty conferences during their training. They are encouraged to present their research at those conferences.
