Rheumatology Fellowship Overview

The Rheumatology fellowship provides trainees exposure to a broad spectrum of patients in a variety of health care settings. Patients are seen in ambulatory acute and continuity clinics. Inpatient consultative care is provided on the medicine, pediatric, surgical and psychiatric wards and in the intensive care units of the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Fellows work closely with educators in the departments of orthopaedics, musculoskeletal radiology, pathology, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

The SAMMC Rheumatology faculty members provide excellent clinical education and have earned the SAUSHEC Internal Medicine “Best Teaching Department” award three of the last six years. Patient care in the department is optimal, and each faculty member participates in ambulatory and inpatient care/teaching. The SAMMC Rheumatology Department currently includes 7 fulltime faculty, 1 PA-C, 1 RN, 1 LVN and 8 medical technician & administrator positions.

Applicants for this program must be graduates of an accredited Internal Medicine residency training program prior to beginning their fellowship training. Trainees are selected from a pool of applicants applying through the Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board. The fellowship program director is a voting member of the selection committee. The application pool includes U.S. Air Force and Army internists currently practicing on active duty and internal medicine residents completing residency in active duty or HPSP sponsored/deferred status.
