Emergency Ultrasound/Point-of-Care Ultrasound Rotation

The Emergency Ultrasound / Point-of-Care Ultrasound Clerkship rotation is a 4-week rotation in the Department of Emergency Medicine that will give you an introduction and hands-on instruction in the rapidly emerging field of emergency ultrasound (US) and point-of-care (POC) US. Regardless of your ultimate medical specialty, you will likely find the skills you develop on this rotation invaluable tool to your future clinical practice in peacetime and wartime environments. This rotation is open to medical students and residents.

During this rotation you will:

  1. Learn basic ultrasound physics and knobology of POC and Emergency US
  2. Learn the indications and limitations for POC and Emergency US
  3. Learn and perform up to fifteen different POC and Emergency US applications to include but not limited to:
    1. Extend focused assessment with sonography in trauma (E-FAST)
    2. Focused biliary
    3. Focused cardiac
    4. Pregnancy-related
    5. Renal
    6. Procedural (central lines, IVs, lumbar punctures, etc.)
    7. Soft tissue ultrasound
    8. Aorta
    9. Musculoskeletal ultrasound
    10. Ocular
    11. Regional anesthesia
    12. Abdominal
  4. Participate in a weekly quality assurance/teaching sessions
  5. Participate in a monthly journal club

During this rotation, you will work closely with San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Emergency Medicine residents and Emergency and Critical US fellows and faculty. This rotation is in the Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine, which is a 64-bed Level I Trauma center that sees over 70K patients annually. There are opportunities to perform ultrasounds in the peri-operative and critical care settings as well.
