Psychiatry

The psychiatry medical student rotations at BAMC are 4-week rotations that allow medical students to contribute to the team. Inpatient Psychiatry and Consult-Liaison Psychiatry are the two options available.

While on the inpatient psychiatry rotation, objectives will be to familiarize the student with the major psychiatric disorders that present to an acute care setting and require the most intense level of psychiatric care. Medical externs are expected to be fully active in all ward and clinic modalities including performing evaluations of new patients presenting to the service. Students will also assist in emergency psychiatric evaluations in our Level 3 trauma center. Students will also be expected to attend and participate in daily morning report, various case forensics, didactics, and Grand Rounds that occur during the rotation.

While on the consult-liaison psychiatry rotation, objectives include learning how to interview and collect collateral history independently, understanding liaison role of the psychiatrist while interacting with medical and surgical teams and investigating the impact of general medical conditions on psychiatric diagnoses. Medical externs are expected to be fully active in all ward and clinic modalities including performing evaluations of new patients presenting to the service. Students will also assist in emergency psychiatric evaluations in our Level 3 trauma center.

The inpatient psychiatry team consists of experienced residents, technicians and mental health nurses on the service, and interfaces with psychologists and social workers in the facility. Students will be expected to assume direct patient care with the supervision of residents and staff as their skill and experience allows. Additionally, the extremes will actively participate in discussion of patient management for other cases followed on the ward. Students will also be expected to attend and participate in daily morning report, various case forensics, didactics, and Grand Rounds that occur during the rotation. Participate in weekly literature conference with topics relevant to consultation Liaison psychiatry, psychopharmacology and evidence base.
