On this service the student will serve as part of the SICU team under the direct supervision of the full-time Director or Assistant Director of the SICU. Time will be divided in order to allow exposure to seriously ill trauma, general surgery, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology and urology patients. BAMC's SICUs are sophisticated, well monitored and computerized special care areas. Care incorporates highly technical skills of cardiac, hemodynamic, intracranial, ventilatory/respiratory, and nutritional monitoring. Knowledge of intubation, tracheostomy, mechanical ventilator, massive transfusion dialysis, hemofiltration, tube thoracostomy, hyperalimentation, shock, multiple system organ failure and infection control can be acquired. Involvement in ongoing clinical research is also a possibility for the interested student.
