General Surgery Residency Application

Internships: Fourth year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Criteria for Selection

Criteria for selection for Army First Year Graduate Medical Education (FYGME) include academic performance in medical school, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, physical, mental and moral fitness.

Research

Many research opportunities are available. Following PGY2 year, all residents perform a year in the lab. Current residents are involved with cancer immunology and the Institute of Surgical Research (ISR) (usaisr.amedd.army.mil). The ISR is the most prestigious academic surgical burn unit military wide with many ongoing protocols related to burn care, critical care and trauma databases providing opportunities for bench research, basic science research and retrospective analysis. BAMC is equipped with a modern, fully supported animal lab, and there are several ongoing animal and human protocols on the General Surgery Service and hospital wide.

Residency/Fellowship

Eligibility -- Active duty Medical Corps (MC) officers who are U.S. citizens and a graduate of an accredited U.S. school of medicine. Any MC active duty officer, who is a graduate from a foreign medical school, must possess a standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

The SAUSHEC General Surgery Residency, the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is a tertiary care center as well as Level I trauma center. BAMC also houses the Institute of Surgical Research and Extremity Trauma (ISR), a state of the art burn care unit.
