Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Application
Internships: Due to military downsizing, only 4th year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Criteria for Selection
Criteria for selection include academic performance in medical school, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, physical, mental and moral fitness.
Research
Both clinical and laboratory research are integrated into the educational program at multiple levels. At the institutional level, a full-time, separate department for research exists. This department is staffed and funded for the explicit purpose of supporting resident and staff research in the residency training program.
The Department of Clinical Investigation at Brooke Army Medical Center is committed to supporting research of the Graduate Medical Education programs. This full-time staff is available for teaching, assistance in the planning and implementation of both clinical and laboratory research, and overseeing the ongoing studies. The department maintains the protocol records for the Institutional Review Board requirements and provides a liaison with the FDA for investigational new drugs and devices. It also provides full editorial support for publications.
Residency/Fellowship
Eligibility -- Active duty Medical Corps (MC) officers who are U.S. citizens and a graduate of an accredited U.S. school of medicine. Any MC active duty officer, who is a graduate from a foreign medical school, must possess a standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
