Pediatrics Residency Application
Internships: Due to military downsizing, only 4th year medical student graduates with a U.S. military obligation (HPSP, USUHS, ROTC) may apply to the Army First Year of Graduate Medical Education (FYGME). Applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
For more detailed information on applying for FYGME, contact the Medical Education Office, FGYME Branch, Falls Church VA, 1-800-793-5970.
Criteria for Selection
Criteria for selection include academic performance in medical school, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, demonstrated interest in military service, leadership potential, physical, mental and moral fitness.
Research
Completing a research project is a requirement for graduation. The minimum requirement is a case report or review of the literature on a topic of interest. Most of the residents do a more substantial prospective or retrospective project, which often result in abstracts and/or publications. There are ample resources within our hospitals, and staff mentors have plenty of ideas for those who are having difficulty planning or implementing a project.
Residency/Fellowship
Eligibility -- Active duty Medical Corps (MC) officers who are U.S. citizens and a graduate of an accredited U.S. school of medicine. Any MC active duty officer, who is a graduate from a foreign medical school, must possess a standard certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
Application Deadline
NLT 15 September of the year before training begins. For more detailed information on applying for Residency/Fellowship programs, contact the BAMC Medical Education Office, (210) 916-2222/3038 or DSN: 429-2222/3038.
