Psychiatry Residency Education

General Educational Activities for Residents and Faculty

Weekly Departmental Case Conferences are done at several training sites; and are mandatory for all staff and residents on those services. This provides an opportunity for a single patient to be presented in detail, followed by discussion of diagnostic and treatment issues by residents and staff. At Wilford Hall this is also the setting for the Distinguished Visiting Professors to conduct patient interviews and case discussions. It also provides opportunities for involving multidisciplinary staff members.

Grand Rounds are held weekly at UTHSCSA at 1315 on Tuesdays. Attendance is required of all residents. Nationally known clinicians and researchers present current psychiatric concepts, research, and issues. Grand Rounds are also held weekly during the year at Wilford Hall on Thursdays at 1300.

Attendance is required of all military residents and civilian residents rotating at WH. It is encouraged for other civilian residents. This forum features formal presentations, often by Distinguished Visiting Professors, on a variety of topics. The speakers also include members of the faculty and residents fulfilling their graduation requirement of a scholarly project.

A time-honored tradition of the WHMC Distinguished Visiting Professors' program is the Evening Journal Club or Psychodynamic Film Club. The DVP selects an article that is distributed to staff and residents before the meeting or a film is shown and then discussion follows. Location and time vary and are typically published by the sponsor in concert with the remainder of the DVP's schedule.

The Weekly Residents' Noon Conference (required of all residents) allows residents to gather informally, share pertinent information, address areas of concern, discuss issues with the RED/DRED who attends on a periodic basis, present scholarly projects, and generally preserve open communication between the different classes, the chief residents, and the faculty. [Tuesdays, 1200, UTHSCSA.]
