Tests & Procedures

BAMC endocrinologists are equipped to treat a range of endocrine disorders and dysfunctions. Many people come to BAMC endocrinology when their condition is unusual or complex. Endocrinology offers the following services. Not all services are available at all locations.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Stimulation Test

A procedure performed in cases of suspected adrenal insufficiency. This test is performed in the morning over the course of one hour at the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC.

Aldosterone Suppression Test 

A procedure performed in cases of suspected primary hyperaldosteronism. This test is performed over the course of several hours at the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC.

Bone Densitometry

An X-ray that quickly and accurately measures the density of bone. It is used primarily to detect osteopenia or osteoporosis, diseases in which the bone's mineral and density are low and the risk of fractures is increased. This test is performed at the DCOE at WHASC and also in Nuclear Medicine at BAMC.

Dexamethasone Suppression Test

Procedure performed in cases of suspected endogenous Cushing’s syndrome. After over-night administration of 1mg of dexamethasone at home, patients report for fasting lab work next morning before 9am.

Growth Hormone Stimulation and Suppression Testing

Procedures to differentiate suspected autonomous growth hormone hypersecretion or growth hormone deficiency.

Prolonged Fasting Test

A procedure of prolonged fasting lasting up to 72 hours in suspected cases of hypoglycemia due to insulin hypersecretion. Testing is performed as an in-patient in the hospital at BAMC.

Osteoporosis Medication Administration

Administration and education of osteoporosis medications by the endocrine nurse at BAMC.

Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration

A procedure that removes a microscopic sample of tissue from your thyroid gland. Cells are removed through a small, hollow needle. The sample is sent to the lab for analysis. This procedure is performed at the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC.

Thyroid Hormone Absorption Test

A procedure performed in cases of suspected poor gastric absorption of thyroid hormone supplements. This test is performed over the course of several hours at the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC.

Thyroid Ultrasonography

A painless imaging method using sound waves to see the thyroid. This test is performed at the bedside in the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC. Formal ultrasound imaging is also done in Radiology at BAMC, WHASC or at the Randolph Clinic on RAFB.

Water Deprivation Testing

A procedure to differentiate among the causes of excessive urination (not due to elevated blood sugar). This test is performed over the course of several hours at the Endocrine Clinic at BAMC.
