Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

Main (Program Overview/Mission/Vision/Aims):

The SAUSHEC Diagnostic Radiology Residency’s singular mission is to develop competent, board-eligible, military Diagnostic Radiologists prepared to serve in a spectrum of stateside and foreign environments.

1. Competent – so that one can practice the Art of Radiology safely which is developed through practical experience at the workstation and at the bedside, furthered through didactic lectures and self-study and enhanced through engaging in QI/PI programs and research
2. Board Eligible – one has passed the CORE examination and remains in good standing with ABR as well as licensing agencies.
3. Military – One possesses the military skills to succeed in the DHA environment by engaging their services core values, embodying professionalism, maintaining ones standards and initiating their officer professional education.

Our vision is to continue to advance our training platform as the DOD’s preeminent service integrated Radiology platform with top notch education in the clinical, military and scholarly domains.

Curriculum/Rotations/Locations/Partnering Institutions

Our curriculum at SAUSHEC consists of a total of 52, four-week rotations (four years) spanning from the PGY-2 (post-intern year) through the PGY-5 year. Our principal clinical rotations include dedicated rotations in Gastrointestinal/Genitourinary Imaging, Thoracic Imaging, Cardiac Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Women’s (Mammography) Imaging, Neuroradiology, Ultrasound, Pediatric Imaging, Nuclear Medicine and Interventional Radiology.

In addition to their clinical rotations, residents receive 26, two-week block didactics covering the spectrum of imaging modalities as well as non-interpretive skills and military unique curricula.

Our principal campuses are Brooke Army Medical Center and Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center.

Residents also rotate outside of our main campuses at the following sites:

1. a. Two months at Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston, TX) where they are immersed in a high volume, subspecialized, acute pediatric environment.
2. b. One month at University Texas Health Sciences San Antonio where they grow their expertise in Transplant Imaging and Advanced Body Imaging in a University Hospital Setting.
3. One month at the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology (Silver Springs, MD) where they engage in a comprehensive four week course correlating imaging features of pathology with their gross and histologic elements.
4. Audie L. Murphy Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (San Antonio, TX) where they develop exposure to Nuclear Medicine in an alternate federal practice environment.

In addition to their clinical curricula, residents also have three additional four-week, non-clinical blocks. One block is dedicated to the principles of Research (e.g., developing and starting one’s research requirement) as well as two blocks reserved for electives.

Military Relevance (military relevance of specialty/how program prepares trainees to be ready for military mission & first assignment)

Of Radiology residency centers, SAUSHEC is poised to be a center most focused on developing the field ready Radiologist.

1. The volume and bread of exposure leads to the most rigorous clinical training as the military’s largest and busiest radiology residency, garnering the most complex patients in the DOD.
2. Residents are expertly trained in all aspects of trauma imaging at the DODs only Level 1 Trauma center. The experiences our deployed radiologists and trauma surgeons bring to our department engage our residents in the precise needs for resident education so that they are deployment-ready.
3. The 24/7 training provided at SAMHS prepare residents for independent life as staff where they may be their only resource. Specifically, the Level 1 Trauma capabilities acutely prepare our residents for the 24/7 ops of deployment where mass casualties are frequently encountered.
4. The collaborative efforts with DOD academic agencies (e.g., Naval Medical Research Unit, Institute for Surgical Research, the School of Aerospace Medicine, Uniformed Services University) provide ongoing clinical and scholarly support to promote militaryrelevant research.

Applications to the Radiology Residency can be done either as a medical student (USU/HPSP) or as a Field Medical Physician Officer.

Initial applications are typically due NLT 31 August of the year before training begins with supplementary material due in the early fall (OCT-NOV) of the year before training begins. Precise dates are subject to change and are reflect on the MODS website.
